Three Sisters Books & Gifts is located at 7 Public Square in downtown Shelbyville. The three sisters, yes they
are really sisters, grew up on a farm a few miles east of downtown Shelbyville. Their memories of the public
square include weekly trips to the dime store and a favorite treat, a trip to DePrez’s toy department. “Being a
part of downtown revitalization is important to us. Our goal is to serve as a community gathering place and
provide a comfortable and homey atmosphere for book browsing and book buying.”
Part of the mission of Three Sisters Books & Gifts is to make the bookstore an active part of the community.
During the last three years, Three Sisters Books & Gifts has supported over 50 local community fund-raisers,
as well as co-sponsoring the SCUFFY and Shelby County Reads Essay Contests. Three Sisters Books reviews
books for the Shelbyville News. A monthly newsletter is mailed to customers about upcoming store events,
special discounts and new book releases. The sisters have presented book programs for local groups and
organizations and read to residents of McKay Manor every week.
Each of the sisters serves on a variety of community organizations. Carolyn serves on the Shelby County Arts
Fest committee and serves on the book selection committee for Shelby County Reads. Mary Kay serves on the
Blue River Foundation Arts Grants Committee and is the leader of the Pitts Kitchen Dulcimer Band. Barbara is a
member of the Shelby County Reads Committee, is on the board of MainStreet Shelbyville, and works part-time
for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security
The mission of the Three Sisters Books and Gifts, LLC is to promote the value of reading and life long learning,
to provide customers with superior service and a comfortable, inviting, friendly place to select books, and to be
a vital part of the community in encouraging and providing educational resources and programs.
